[Also in Group XXXVI] A moving-coil instrument movement 19 is supplied with a discretely - variable current and rotates an arcuate strip 22 bearing at least one row of characters, the selected one of which is projected by optical system 30, 29, 26 on to a screen through an aperture 13 in end plate 10. The optical axis y is slightly inclined to the horizontal in order to reduce the vertical dimensions of the device. Where more than one row of characters is provided on strip 22, a particular row may be projected by selectively energizing solenoids 44, 51, Fig. 8, controlling shutters 46, 40, each row having an associated optical system. A number of the devices may be placed side-byside to provide e multi-digit display each device having a recess in front plate 10 to accommodate a decimal point lamp when required.
