Abstract

Mineral and synthetic lubricating oil compositions comprise oil-soluble salts of copolymers built up from 60 to 98% by weight of monomers of formula <FORM:0919038/III/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group and R2 is an aliphatic group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and up to 30% by weight of a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one basic, non-heterocyclic, nitrogencontaining group, and optionally up to 20% of further ethylenically unsaturated monomers, said basic groups having been either partially or wholly converted into salt from before or after copolymerization by reaction with an acid ester of an inorganic acid, e.g. phosphoric, an alkyl and/or aryl substituted inorganic acid, a thio acid, a sulphonic acid or thioglycollic acid. Specified esters are lauryl methacrylate, decyl acrylate, dodecyl methacrylate and mixtures of C12-18 fatty alcohol methacrylates. Specified basic monomers are dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, dialkylaminocyclohexyl acrylates and methacrylates, N-cyclohexylaminoethyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl vinyl ether and N-tert. octylaminoethyl vinyl ether. Specified additional monomers are methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate and maleic acid esters. The compositions may also comprise antioxidants, high pressure additives and corrosion inhibitors.ALSO:Salts of copolymers built up from 60 to 98% by weight of monomers of formula <FORM:0919038/IV(a)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group and R2 is an aliphatic group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, and up to 30% by weight of a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one basic, non-heterocyclic, nitrogen-containing group, and optionally up to 20% by weight of further ethylenically unsaturated monomers, said basic groups having been either partially or wholly converted into salt from before or after p copolymerization by reaction with an acid ester of an inorganic acid, an alkyl and/or aryl substituted inorganic acid, a thio acid or thioglycollic acid, said salts being soluble in mineral or synthetic lubricating oil, may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers. Specified esters are lauryl methacrylate, decyl acrylate, dodecyl methacrylate and mixtures of C12-18 fatty alcohol methacrylates. Specified basic monomers are dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, dialkylaminocyclohexyl acrylates and methacrylates, N-cyclohexylaminoethyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl vinyl ether and N-tert. octylaminoethyl vinyl ether. Specified additional monomers are methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate and maleic acid esters. Salt formation may be effected with p-toluene sulphonic acid, p-dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid, monobutyl phosphate, dibutyl phosphate and diphenyl phosphate. The copolymer salts are useful as lubricating oil additives.
