Abstract
Polyethylene or a copolymer thereof with another olefinic hydrocarbon is prepared by polymerizing at below 100 atmospheres using a catalyst formed by reducing titanium tetrahalogenide with from 0,5 to 1 mole of dialkyl aluminium hydride per mole of titanium tetrahalogenide and by adding further titanium tetrahalogenide to the reaction product. Titanium tetrachloride, diethyl, dipropyl, disobutyl, dihexyl and dioctyl aluminium hydride are specified catalyst ingredients. The additional titanium salt may be added before or after the olefin mixture and the process may be continuous. The polymerization may take place in an inert liquid medium, e.g. hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, gasoline, kerosine, benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, and mineral oil fractions.
