Abstract

1323353 Synthetic lubricating oil SNAM PROGETTI SpA 11 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 43666/70 Heading C5E A synthetic lubricating oil is produced by polymerizing in the presence of a BF 3 .H 2 O catalyst an olefinic hydrocarbon mixture capable of being obtained by wax cracking, the temperature of the hydrocarbon mixture during polymerization being initially increased, then reduced and thereafter maintained at the reduced value. The feedstock may be a mixture of α-olefins within the range C 7 to C 20 . The temperature may initially be allowed to increase rapidly to 50‹ C. and may then be reduced to and maintained at about 35‹ C. The polymer is separated and distilled, and may then be catalytically hydrogenated to remove impurities, e.g. using Ni on kieselguhr or Al 2 O 3 , at 200-300‹ C.
