Abstract
A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a hydrocarbon polymer prepared by polymerizing one or more alpha-olefins having 10-22 carbon atoms in the molecule, alone or with one or more alpha-olefins having 5-8 carbon atoms in the molecule at below 80 DEG C. in the presence of a Ziegler type catalyst, the ratio of 10-22 carbon atom olefins to 5-8 carbon atom olefins when used being such that 5-15% of the alkyl side chains in the polymer will contain 3-6 carbon atoms. Specified lubricating oils are mineral oils and hydrocarbon lubricants from olefin polymerization, the hydrogenation of cracked wax olefins, and wax isomerization and they may be either waxy lubricating oils or partially or completely dewaxed hydrocarbon oils.ALSO:A mixture of alpha-olefins having 10-22 carbon atoms in the molecule is obtained by polymerizing an alpha-olefin having less than 10 carbon atoms in the molecule at a temperature between 100 DEG and 250 DEG C. and under a pressure above 500 lbs. per sq. inch in the presence of the reducing component of a Ziegler catalyst followed by removal of compounds containing less than ten carbon atoms in the molecule from the reaction product. Specified reducing components are organo-aluminium compounds such as aluminium triethyl or triisobutyl, zinc alkyls and Grignard compounds. Ethylene is the preferred starting material, and distillation the specified separating process. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of inert hydrocarbon diluents but this is not essential.ALSO:A hydrocarbon polymer is prepared by polymerizing one or more alpha-olefins having 10-22 carbon atoms in the molecule, alone or with one or more alpha-olefins having 5-8 carbon atoms in the molecule, at a temperature below 80 DEG C. in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst, the ratio of alpha-olefins of 10-22 carbon atoms to those of 5-8 in the polymerization mixture in the second case being such that 5-15% of the alkyl side chains in the resulting polymer will contain 3-6 carbon atoms. The polymerization may be carried out by polymerizing a "10-22" alpha-olefin, adding another "10-22" alpha-olefin and continuing the polymerization. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a saturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic liquid hydrocarbon diluent but this is not essential. The mixture of alpha-olefins having 10-22 carbon atoms may be prepared by polymerizing an alpha-olefin having less than 10 carbon atoms at between 100 DEG and 250 DEG C. and under a pressure above 500 pounds per square inch in the presence of a component B (e.g. organo-aluminium compounds) of a Ziegler catalyst followed by the removal of compounds containing less than ten carbon atoms in the molecule from the reaction product; such lower alpha-olefins may be those having less than six carbon atoms, e.g. ethylene.
