Abstract
918,812. Soldering. SCHULTHEISS, A. March 21, 1961 [March 23, 1960], No. 10166/61. Class 83 (4). In securing a metal ball in carrying fusible material in the filling &c. opening in a metal container the ball is pressed against the boundary of the hole by a first electrode, a second electrode is placed in contact with the container and current is caused to flow through the container and ball to melt the fusible material which on cooling secures the ball in the hole. Empty containers are fed on to a wheel during the rotation of which they are filled and are then fed to a further wheel and while thereon pass beneath a ball feeding device comprising a magazine 21, Fig. 2, above a disc 22 having recesses for carrying single balls 20 past a disc 26 which spreads a paste of solder and flux from a container 27 over the balls. When a recess carrying a coated ball reaches its lowermost position a gravity operated ejector 25 pushes the ball from the recess, a recess closing lever 29 is moved away by engagement with a container 41 and the ball passes into the filling opening through a guide member 30, having an aperture 31, Fig. 2b, arranged on the carrier wheel above the container. The members 30 which rotate with the wheel are raised and lowered relative to the containers by cam means. The containers are then fed on to another wheel having soldering electrode stations arranged on the wheel above the containers and each including an electrode 42, Fig. 4, urged against the ball 20 and a bell-shaped electrode 45 urged against the container top. The lifting and lowering of the electrodes relative to the container is controlled by cam means. The current supplied to the electrodes is of high cement and low voltage and may be supplied from a stationary transformer through carbon brushes or from transformers rotating with the carrier wheel and supplied through carbon brushes. Alternatively the secondary 81, Fig. 6, is rotatable with the soldering station and the primary 80 is fixed on a stationary pillar 83. Cooling oil is supplied by a pipe 85 to immerse the windings.
