Abstract

918,748. Winding and reeling wire; drawing. VAUGHN MACHINERY CO. April 10, 1961 [Dec.15, 1960], No. 12850/61. Class 83 (4). A wire packaging machine comprises a stationary take-up block, a coaxial rotatable flyer assembly to wrap wire around it in the form of successive convolutions, a wobbling push-off ring adjacent to one end of the block, the ring and the flyer assembly having a rotary connection between them about an axis which is tilted with respect to the axis of the block and a universal joint means between the ring and the block to prevent rotation of the ring relative to the block but to permit wobbling of the ring through the rotary connection. A machine 1 comprises a housing 2 to which is attached a stationary horizontal take-up block 7 having curved tubular horns 6 which guide the wire convolutions from the block through 90 degrees to gravitate over the guide bars 5 fixed to a base 4 of a pallet 3 to form a coil C. A spring-loaded catch 8 acts as a convolution collector and a pair of arms 12 pivoted about the brackets 14 arrest the descent of the convolutions during pallet changeover. A flyer shaft 18 having a keyed wheel 23 is rotatably mounted on bearings 19, 20, 21 and is driven by a motor 27 via a speed reducer unit, worm-shaft 24 and the wheel 23. The shaft 18 extends forwardly and is rotatably mounted in bearings 29, 30 in the centre of a take-up block 7. A flyer assembly 10 is mounted on the shaft 18 having a radial slot 32 connecting with the bore 34 and aligned with a slot 31 in which are journalled sheaves 35, 36 and a roller 37. A pair of pinions 40 keyed to a shaft 38 supported in bearings 39 of the flyer assembly 10 mesh with gears 41, 42 fixed to the housing 2 and the take-up block 7, during rotation of the shaft 18 with the assembly 10 the block 7 is held against rotation due to the meshing of the pinion 40 with the fixed gear 41. A guide frame 43 mounted on a boss 45 carries a series of guide sheaves 46 and rollers 47, the last sheave 46 is mounted in a block adjustable in guideways 49 of the frame 43 by means of a screw 50. A bearing mounting plate 51 for the push-off ring 9 is supported on opposed tapered roller bearings 52 between the hubs 53, 54 respectively. The plate 51 is tilted from the vertical to cause wobbling of the non-rotating ring 9 as the flyer assembly 10 is rotated. The ring 9 having a bevelled face 57 is fitted over the rear end of the block 7 and is prevented from rotating but permitted to wobble by means of a universal joint assembly 58 comprising a bracket assembly 59 fixed to the block 7, a bracket 61 attached to the ring 9 and each having a spherical bearing 60, 62 respectively and the links 65 which are pivotally coupled via pins 63, 64 to the bearings 60, 62. The flyer assembly 10 may be fitted with a wire drawing die 13 to draw the wire as it is wrapped around the take-up book 7. Operation.-Incoming wire passes under a sheave 15 of a pivoted tension arm 16, through an adjustable pinch roll assembly 17 which tensions the wire as it is wrapped around the take-up block, through the shaft 18 and the slot 32 over the sheaves 35, 36 and roller 37 thence over the sheaves and rollers 46, 47 of the flyer guide frame 43. The curvature of the wire may be adjusted by adjustment of the last sheave 46 via the screw 50. Rotation of the flyer assembly 10 in a clockwise direction wraps the wire around the take-up block 7 adjacent to the bevelled face 57 of the push-off ring 9, the wobbling action of which progressively pushes the wire axially towards the horns 6, periodically the accumulated convolutions overcome the spring-loaded catch 8 and gravitate down the curved path of the horns on to the guide bars 5 of the pallet 3. When the coil C is of desired size the arms 12 are swung inwardly to arrest the convolutions, the wire is cut, the loaded pallet 3 removed and replaced by an empty pallet and the arms swung outwardly to release the convolutions and continue the sequence.
