Abstract

[Also in Group XIII] In apparatus in which sheet material, e.g. a fabric or a multiplicity of filaments in sheet form, is passed a plurality of times through a heated fluidized bed, the msterial is passed downwardly through the bed 10 and then upwardly therethrough its direction being reversed by a roller 14 in a bottom chamber which has entry and exit slits for the material and is supplied with compressed air which prevents the bed filling from passing through the slits into the bottom chamber and fluidizes the bed. As shown the bed includes guides 12 for the material and louvres 13 heated by steam or electric elements or combustion gases. The bed is separated from the chamber by inclined side walls 23 and inclined interior walls 22 arranged as an inverted V. The slits are formed between the lower ends of these walls, are adjustable in width and are tangential to the roller. The roller is surmounted by an arcuate plate 21. Compressed air headers 19, 24 below and above the roller supply air to the roller chamber through ports 20, 25, two of the latter directing the air also into the slits. If the material passes more than twice through the bed, upper reversing rollers are located above the bed and a plurality of bottom rollers are located in a common bottom chamber or in separate chambers. Stentering means may be provided. Electric heaters in the louvres 13 may be controlled by thermal-responsive elements in the bed. The bed may have fluidizing air inlets additional to the material inlet and outlet slits. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to fixing the dye on polyester fabric.
