Abstract
918,492. Centrifugal compressors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 22, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24889/58. Class 110 (1). In a multi-stage centrifugal compressor plant, a number of intercoolers are associated with successive compression stages and are located in parallel flow paths around the axis of the compressor, so that the air discharged from each compression stage is passed through a pair of intercoolers in parallel and the pair of intercoolers associated with at least one pair of successive stages are located in a common transverse plane. The rotor in Fig. 1 comprises six impellers, 4-9, mounted back-toback in pairs on a shaft 10. The easing is formed with upper and lower compartments 12 and side compartments 13. on opposite sides of the shaft, and the parallel intercoolers of each pair are located in the diametrically opposite chambers 12 or 13. Air enters the eye of the first impeller 4 and is discharged through passages 15 to flow in parallel paths through intercoolers 4<SP>1</SP> into the eye 16 of the impeller 5. The air is further compressed and discharged over the intercoolers 5<SP>1</SP>, which are in the same plane but displaced at 90 degrees from the intercoolers 4<SP>1</SP>, the flow continuing through the remaining stages to the discharge conduit 3.
