Abstract
917,204. Knitting-machines. NICKELL, L. C. Jan. 23, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 2543/61. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a device for stopping a fabric-producing machine as a result of a flaw being detected in the fabric by a scanning head which traverses its width, the head comprises two photo-cells whose higher sensitive surfaces are symmetrically disposed about, and substantially in planes normal to, the optical axis of a lens, and a mask between the lens and the cells contains two apertures each of which admits light to a respective one of the cells, the light being reflected from different discrete but adjacent zones of the fabric and focused by the lens on to the cells so that unbalance of the light received thereby causes response of control means to stop the machine. Such a head comprises a housing 11 which contains a mounting plate 15 whose lower surface serves as a reflector for light from two lamps 25 mounted therein, the lamps being spaced symmetrically either side of a tube 27 containing a lens 30. Light reflected by the fabric 44 is focused by the lens through two apertures 42 and 43 on to, respectively, photo-cells 40, 41, the configuration being such that the light reaching each cell is from one of two areas of the fabric which are slightly spaced apart.
