Abstract

880,174. Photoelectric flaw detectors. BRITISH RAYON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. May 3, 1960 [April 25, 1959], No. 14183/59. Class 40(3). In an arrangement for detecting flaws in a sheet material, particularly for knitted fabrics, comprising a stationary light-source associated with a scanning device having a reflecting or a refracting surface for directing light from the source towards the sheet material, and photo-sensitive means to detect the light as influenced by the sheet material, the scanning device is mounted for periodic progression transversely of the sheet. As shown, a beam 11 from a source 11a is focused as a beam parallel to the surface of a sheet 13 on to a scanning device 15 having a lens 15a and mirror 15b projecting a linear beam of small width on to the under surface 13a of the sheet 13. The variably reflected light is transmitted in the reverse path to a half-silvered mirror 18 associated with an apertured diaphragm 19 and a photosensitive device 14. The scanning element 15 is moved across the sheet 13 by a chain or belt 16 driven by one of the wheels 17 and carrying a second scanning device 15, which is operative when the other device is moving along its lower or inoperative path. In a modification, the scanning device 15 may be reciprocated across the under surface 13a of the sheet 13. Also, a number of simultaneously operative scanning elements associated with separate photo-sensitive detectors may be arranged obliquely across the width of a driving belt. In response to a flaw the output from the photo-sensitive member 14 may be used to stop the fabricating machine, and arrangement may be made to disable the stop device for the inoperative periods of the scanning elements, i.e. whilst passing round the curved parts of the wheels 17. The detecting beam from the scanning element 15 may pass through the sheet 11 to the photo-sensitive device, and the arrangement may be used to examine the transparency of sheets, or, with the use of appropriate filters, their colour characteristics. The width of the detecting beam reflected from the mirror 15b may be such as to cover the extent of a number of groups of threads forming a periodic or recurring pattern.
