Abstract
<PICT:0916867/IV(a)/1> Apparatus for continuously digesting &c. cellulosic material, e.g. chips, comprises a chamber 11 with an inlet 21 submerged in the digestion liquor, e.g. a caustic solution, and an outlet 22, a screw-feeder 10 (transverse to the plane of the drawing), with a perforated casing, compressing the chips &c. to eliminate voids and express air and liquids so that on entering the chamber 11 they expand whilst submerged and are received by a screw-conveyer 25 which takes them over a strainer 26 and discharges them at 22 to an assembly 12 which may be identical with the feeder 10 and from which they fall through a spout 49 to a conveyer 50 which feeds them to defibring machines 13 which deliver them as pulp to a stock chest 15 from which the pulp is pumped at 16 to refiners &c. Digestion liquor from the tank 17 is circulated through pipe-lines as illustrated, the lines 41 being for spraying the chips before they are compressed. The chips may be processed at room temperature, e.g. for 20 mins. submerged time, and 5 mins. drainage time. The compression by the screw-assemblies 10, 12 effects substantial defibring.
