Abstract
916,321. Transistor comparator circuits. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd. Feb. 6, 1959 [Feb. 7, 1958], No. 4153/58. Class 40 (6). In a voltage comparator a variable voltage applied to the base of a first transistor is compared with stable reference voltage derived from a Zener diode and applied to the base of a second transistor, the stable voltage being in series with the emitter-base voltage of the second transistor in the emitter base circuit of the first transistor so that variations in output current caused by changes of emitter base voltage of the first transistor due to temperature changes are commensated by variations in the base emitter voltage of the second transistor. In the Figure an alternating current input voltage is applied through terminals X to the base of a first transistor T1 while a reference voltage is applied from a Zener diode Z6 to the base of the second transistor. If the input voltage exceeds the voltage applied to the base of the second transistor sufficient current flows in the first transistor to operate a relay 15. Variations in the operation of the circuit due to variations with temperature of the base emitter circuit of the first transistor are compensated by corresponding variations in the base emitter circuit of the second transistor, the two transistors being mounted in closely-spaced holes in a relatively large metal block. Temperature compensation for the Zener diode Z6 is effected by a temperature-sensitive resistor R5.
