Abstract

915,837. Winding thread; traverse mechanisms. CARTER & CO. Ltd., B. & F. Dec. 8, 1959 [Dec. 9, 1958], No. 39652/58. Class 120 (2). A winding-machine for winding thread on to flanged bobbins, of the kind having a guide for the thread mounted on a carriage with reversing traverse means for reciprocating the carriage is characterized in that the reversing traverse means comprises forward and return traverse feed screws, means for continuously driving said feed screws, a complementary half-nut for each feed-screw, engagement means for alternately engaging one or other of the said halfnuts with the appropriate feed-screw to progress the carriage and adjustable means at each end of the traverse adapted, on contact by the carriage to effect the change-over from engagement of one half-nut with its appropriate screw to the other with its associated screw, the engagement means including a shaft for limited pivotal motion about the longitudinal axis thereof, the half-nuts being so mounted relative to the shaft as to be movable longitudinally thereof and to be engaged by one or other feedscrew upon pivotal motion of the shaft. In the embodiment shown, the winding-machine comprises a frame 10, 11 mounting an electric driving-motor 12, a winding-head 14 and bobbin centre 15. Motor 12 drives by means of three stepped pulleys 13, 17 a countershaft 16 from which a drive is taken to the winding-head 14 by means of belt 19. On the shaft 16 is also a pinion 22 meshing with idler pinion 23 which in turn meshes with a changeable pinion 24 on shaft 25. On shaft 25 is a pulley 26 coupled by belt 27 to compound pulley 28 of a known type of variable-speed gear which is further coupled by belt 29 to a pulley 30. Mounted on the same shaft as pulley 30 is a gear-wheel 31 which meshes with gear-wheel 32 which in turn meshes with gear-wheel 33, the gears 32 and 33 being on the ends of traverse feed-screws 34, 35. Control of the variable-speed gear 28 is effected from a hand wheel 28a. Between and below feed-screws 34, 35 is a square controlshaft 36 (Fig. 5) carrying traverse block 37 shaped on either side with threads of half-nutsto engage the respective feed-screws. On one side of block 37 is a plate 37b aligned for engagement with an adjustable abutment screw 49 and a stop 50 which is adjustable on shaft 46. Mounted from the block 37 is a suitable guide arrangement for the thread. In operation assuming the block 37 travelling towards the screw 49, when it contacts the latter it causes the screw-shaft 46 to move to the left until a cam block 45 abuts contact 44a of switch 44 and causes the latter to operate solenoid 42 which pivots the shaft 36 and block 37 to effact engagement with the other fend-screw and thus reverse the motion of block 37. At the other end of the traverse the plate 37b abuts the stop 50 to move the shaft 46 to the right and dis-engage the cam 45 from contact 44a thereby de-energizing solenoid 42 and re-energizing the other solenoid (not shown) to transfer the engagement of the half-nuts from screw 35 to screw 34 so that traversing is continued. The traverse length can be finely adjusted by screw 49 and stop 50 during operation so as to avoid any build-up of thread or gap at the flanges of the bobbin. The pitch of the traverse can be adjusted by altering the setting of the variable-speed gear and the range of pitch setting can be altered by changing the pinion 24.
