Abstract
Olefinic monomers are polymerized in presence of a catalyst comprising the reaction product formed by mixing and reacting in the presence of a C2-6 aliphatic mono-olefin, a transition metal halide and a phenyl or alkylphenyl alkali metal compound, the basicity of the latter being less than amyl sodium. The said C2-6 olefin may be, e.g. ethylene, propylene or butylene. In the example, ethylene was polymerized and was also present when the catalyst components, TiCl4 and C6H5Na or p-t-BuC6H4Na, were mixed and reacted. A list of suitable Na, K and Rb organo compounds is given and the usual transition metal halides are also mentioned.
