Abstract

A catalyst composition for polymerizing alpha-olefins is obtained by mixing together (1) a halide or oxyhalide of a transition metal of Groups IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table and (2) an organoaluminium compound of the formula R4Al2SO4 where each R is a C1- 15 hydrocarbon radical, and optionally one or more of the following compounds: (1) compounds of the formula PX3 or POX3, where X is halogen, (2) compounds of the formula SOX2 or SO2X2, where X is halogen, (3) organophosphites, phosphates, phosphines, or phosphoric triamides, (4) silanes substituted by amino groups and chlorine, (5) triazines, and (6) heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorus in the ring. The polymerization is carried out using known "low - pressure" techniques. Hydrogen may be present. Exemplified alpha-olefines are propylene, 3-methyl-1-butene, butene, styrene, and a mixture of ethylene and propylene.
