Abstract

915,547. Mirrors. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 26, 1960], No. 27923/61. Class 97 (1). [Also in Group XXXII] A mirror, particularly a rear-view mirror for automobiles, which is perceptibly free from double images when viewed from a distance of 15 inches or more, comprises a thin sheet of transparent material with parallel front and back surfaces, the back surface being reflecting. The thickness of the transparent material is preferably between 0.003 and 0.006 inch and the refractive index is preferably between 1.52 and 1.7 and a backing material supports the transparent sheet behind the reflecting surface. Such a mirror may be made by pressing a transparent sheet of material 11 of the correct thickness on to a paraffin wax coating 18 on a mould 16, Fig. 2, by means of a pressing-tool 14, a layer of unsized paper 19 protecting the transparent material from scratching by the pressing-tool 14. The assembly is then placed in an hydraulic press while the mould is maintained warm enough to keep the paraffin wax coating 18 from hardening. A pressure of approximately 50 lbs. per square inch is employed and this pressure is maintained until the mould 16 is cooled below the hardening temperature of the paraffin wax. Thereafter the pressing-tool is released, the unsized paper removed, and the exposed surface of the transparent sheet 11 is then washed with soap and water and scrubbed as with nitric and chromic acid followed by a distilled water rinse. The exposed surface is then made reflective as by evaporation of metal. A backing material 13 as of synthetic resin, e.g. an epoxy resin, is then cast on to the reflective surface. For this purpose a flexible band 20, Fig. 3, is placed around the mould to form a receptacle 21 in which this backing material 13 may be poured. The backing material is in liquid form and at a temperature which will not melt the paraffin wax coating 18. When the backing material is sufficiently hardened the mirror assembly is removed from the mould 16 and a grinding operation may then be carried out to finish the edges of the mirror.
