Abstract

915,490. Inking-apparatus. WOOD NEWSPAPER MACHINERY CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 4392/61. Class 100 (2). An adjustable socket for an ink roller of a printing press comprises mounting means in the socket body for receiving an end of the roller shaft, a cut-out in the body comprising a track, a plurality of rectangular lugs mounted on the machine frame with at least one of said lugs slidably engaging the edges of said track, an adjusting screw threadingly engaging another of said lugs and passing through a bore in said body with a portion of said screw operatively engaging said body, whereby, as the screw is rotated, the body will be caused to move with respect to the frame, and clamping means independent of said screw for locking the body to the frame when in the clamped position to prevent movement of the body with respect to the frame. A socket body 20, Fig. 2, and cap 21 secured thereto by screws 22, 23 form a receptacle to receive an anti-friction bearing 24 for an ink roller shaft 25. A cut-out 27 in the body 20 slidably receives a lug 28 pivoted to the machine frame, while a lug 30 fixed to the frame threadedly receives a screw 31 rotatable to move the assembly 20, 21, 25 relative to the frame in a direction to move the inking roller equally towards and away from a plate cylinder and an ink drum or two ink drums. A second screw 32 causes the assembly to swing about the pivot of the lug 28, this being permitted by a rotatable insert 33 receiving the screw 31, to compensate for skew or alter the pressure against one of the members in contact with the roller. Clamping screws 41, 42 secure the body in adjusted position to the frame. For unidimensional adjustment, the screw 32 is omitted and the lug 30 is also received in a cutout in the body. A device for adjusting the roller with a predetermined pressure comprises a compression-spring 60, Fig. 6, bearing on a journal 62 and on a spring cover 61 bearing on the head of the screw 31. The force exerted by the spring to urge the roller into operative contact with a drum or cylinder is a function of the length of the spring, which can be read by indicating means and adjusted by rotating the screw 31. The spring may be replaced by a plurality of Belleville washers. In another form for uni-dimensional adjustment, one of the clamping-screws is slidably accommodated in a groove in the body, rotation of the adjusting screw causing the assembly to pivot about the other clamping screw.
