Abstract

A method of making a pigment master-batch comprises mixing a stabilized dispersion of a polyolefine in water with an aqueous mass of pigment, coagulating the mixture, removing the aqueous phase from the coagulum and drying and preferably pulverizing the solid so obtained. The polyolefine may be polyethylene or polypropylene, advantageously of low molecular weight, and may be stabilized by anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agents. The pigment may be organic or inorganic, should be insoluble in the polymer and should be finely subdivided. Coagulation may be carried out using free acid, or by adding salts such as sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, potassium hydrogen sulphate, di-sodium hydrogen phosphate, potassium hydrogen phthalate or potassium dihydrogen phosphate and then bringing the mixture to the boil. If an acid or acid salt is used it is only necessary to add the salt in aqueous solution to pH 4,5, whereas if a neutral salt is used, preferably 100% w/w (calculated on pigment) is added. At this stage materials such as finely-divided calcium carbonate, pale American rosin or cresol/formaldehyde resin may be added to improve the texture of the pigment. The pigment powder may be added to a polyolefine such as polyethylene or polypropylene in an amount up to 10% at a temperature between 150 DEG and 250 DEG C. on conventional equipment.
