Abstract

Salts obtained by reacting an aliphatic amine, containing from 12 to 20 carbon atoms, with an a - or b -hydroxy fatty acid containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule, in particular stearine amine lactate, are used in aqueous solution or dispersion to promote adhesion between aggregate and bituminous binders. Amines such as C14H20NH2, C18H37NH2, and those primary amines derived from natural or synthetic fatty acids are preferred.ALSO:Adhesion between a bituminous binder and an aggregate is improved by contacting the binder and/or aggregate with an acqueous solution or dispersion of a salt formed by reacting an aliphatic amine containing 12 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule with a - or b -hydroxy fatty acid containing from 4 to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule. Stearine amine lactate (see Group IV(b)) in solution or as a pasty solid and further activated if required by lactic acid or calcium hydroxide, is added to siliceous aggregate and 3 to 5,5% of a binder (based on the aggregate) such as cut-back bitumen, acqueous bitumen emulsion or road oil.
