Abstract

Emulsions containing 3 to 30 per cent by weight of an amino compound, a mineral oil, and an acid are prepared either by mixing the oil and amino compound with an aqueous medium which may contain a water soluble inorganic salt of a polyvalent metal and slowly adding acid to cause reversal; or by colloidally dispersing the amino compound in the aqueous salt solution and slowly adding acid and then the oil. Part only of the water may be in the salt solution, the remainder being added after adding the acid. In either method the temperature should not exceed 80 DEG C.ALSO:Aggregate, before coating with a bituminous binder, is treated with a suspension comprising 3 to 30 per cent of an amine, amine salt, acylamide or acylamidoamine, containing a lipophilic radicle, a mineral oil and an acid. The acid may be partially or wholly combined with the amine, or be in the free state. Specified amino compounds are condensation products of ammonia or an amine with a vegetable fatty substance, or soaps of amines with fatty acids having at least 12 C. atoms, naphthenic acids, or tall oil. Amines specified for soap formation include, hexa-, hepta-, octadecylamines, octadecenylamine, and polyamines e.g. ethylene diamine, and tertiary amines of the general formula <FORM:0744505/V/1> where x and y are integers and R an alkyl group. The mineral oil, preferred amount 10 to 20 per cent, can be a mixture of a light and heavy oil. The acid can be organic or inorganic. In addition, a water soluble inorganic salt of a polyvalent metal is also present, e.g. aluminium sulphate. In use, the suspension is diluted with 80 to 90 per cent of water, and the percentage of amino compound to solid aggregate is 0.001 to 0.01.
