Abstract

A bituminous composition which has great adhesion to solid surfaces and can be used as a protection for metals against corrosion comprises asphalts, petroleum distillation residues, coal tars or pitches, and one or more oilsoluble surface-active organic derivatives of ammonia containing at least one naphthene radical in the molecule. The derivative may be a primary, secondary or tertiary naphthenamine or a quaternary ammonium salt derived from naphthenic acids of acid values not more than 230, and may contain up to about 50 per cent by weight of the acid from which it is derived, or may be used in conjunction with other organic amines or quaternary ammonium salts known as adhesion assistants for bitumen. Less than about 2 per cent of the derivative is added to the bituminous substance. Examples of suitable derivatives are dinaphthenylamine, N-naphthenyl piperidine, naphthenyl pyridinium chloride, naphthenyl trimethyl ammmonium chloride, naphthenyl dimethyl cetyl ammonium bromide and 1 : 3-dinaphthenylaminopropane-2-ol. Specification 472,632, [Group V], French Specification 671,388 and German Specification 500,434 are referred to.ALSO:A bituminous composition, which has great adhesion to solid materials such as aggregates used in road-making, comprises asphalts, petroleum distillation residues, coal tars, or pitches and one or more oil-soluble surface-active organic derivatives of ammonia containing at least one naphthene radical in the molecule. The derivative may be a primary, secondary, or tertiary naphthenamine or a quaternary ammonium salt derived from naphthenic acids of acid values not more than 230, and may contain up to about 50 per cent by weight of the acid from which it is derived, or may be used in conjunction with other organic amines or quarternary ammonium salts known as adhesion assistants for bitumen. Less than about 2 per cent of the derivative is added to the bituminous substance. Examples of suitable derivatives are dinaphthenylamine, N-naphthenyl piperidine naphthenyl pyridinium chloride, naphthenyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, napththenyl dimethyl cetyl ammonium bromide, and 1 : 3 dinaphthenylaminopropane-2-ol. Specification 472,632, French Specification 671,388 and German Specification 500,434 are referred to.
