Abstract

915,328. Coating webs. BELOIT IRON WORKS. May 9, 1960 [Sept. 25, 1959], No. 16339/60. Class 140. A method of coating a paper web 31 comprises guiding the web through a coating liquid 32 on a roll 30 and doctoring the web at 34 to smooth the coating, the web passing through a restricted opening 37 in the liquid to press liquid into the web. The opening 37 is formed between a member, e.g. a fixed bar 35 which may be perforated at 38, and the roll 30, the top of the bar 35 being rounded (see Fig. 7, not shown). A plurality of bars 35 may be provided, spaced apart in the direction of travel of the web, or the bar 35 may have an upstanding flexible blade in its upper surface engaging the roll 30. Alternatively, the pressing member may comprise a rotatable roll supported with its axis parallel to that of the roll 30. The roll 30 and the container 33 are separable vertically. The doctor 34 comprises a blade and a shield 36 providing a path for returning excess liquid. End wipers 24 contact the roll 30, and the container 33 has an inwardly directed flange 16.
