Abstract

915,197. Valves. ADAMS, K. April 21, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 13572/59. Class 135. An automatic non-return butterfly valve is actuated through a driving device by a differential area piston of which the larger area is exposed to the pressure downstream of the butterfly whilst the smaller area is exposed to the upstream pressure. The valve is arranged also for manual actuation into any position and the driving device incorporates a clutch to change over from one form of actuation to the other. The butterfly 5 has its shaft 10 eccentrically mounted with respect to the valve seat 4 so that it tends to open under the upstream pressure. Shaft 10 carries a loose pinion 34 which may be coupled to the shaft through a sliding clutch 47, the pinion 34 being engaged by a rack 44 connected to the differential area piston 23 of which the larger area 23b is exposed through pipe 31 to the downstream pressure whilst the smaller area 23a is exposed through pipe 30 to the upstream pressure, whereby in this coupled position the valve automatically opens under an upstream pressure sufficiently exceeding the downstream pressure and closes under reverse or zero flow conditions. Shaft 10 also carries a loose worm-wheel 41 which may alternatively be coupled to the shaft by clutch 47, the worm-wheel being engaged by a worm 44 operated by a hand wheel 46. The piston carries a throttling member 54 cooperating with the pipe 30 or an adjustable throttle may be fitted in this pipe. Pinion 34 may be made fast with the shaft 10.
