Abstract

766,702. Fluid-actuated valves. BLAKEBOROUGH & SONS, Ltd., J. July 12, 1955 [July 12, 1954], No. 20348/54. Class 135. In a by-pass valve comprising an axially movable sleeve 30 at the pump side of a main water supply valve 10, the inner end of the sleeve 30 being open to the pump supply, and a valve seat 42 connected with the outer end of the sleeve 30 being closable by a by-pass valve member 38, movement of the sleeve 30 to cause engagement and disengagement of the member 38 and seat 42 is controlled by the valve 10. The stem 14 of the valve 10 is connected by a fork-ended lever 28 to the sleeve 30 attached to an orifice block 34, designed to allow a given flow of water, connected to a housing 36 incorporating the seat 42 for the member 38 which is slidable in the housing 36; a stem 46 on the member 38 co-operates with an adjustable abutment 48. With the valve 10 closed water flows through the sleeve 30, housing 36 and an outlet 54; upon a demand for water arising on the outlet side of the valve 10 the latter is unseated whereupon axial movement of the stem 14 rocks the lever 28 and moves the sleeve 30, block 34 and housing 36 to the left, the member 38 remaining stationary due to differential water pressure on the opposite ends thereof, until the seat 42 engages the seat portion 40 of member 38 at which time the flow of water through the sleeve is terminated. As the valve 10 moves further off its seat the member 38 is moved together with the housing 36. As soon as flow ceases around the valve 10 and it returns to its seat the lever 28 moves the sleeve 30 to the right together with the housing 36, block 34 and valve member 38 during which movement the stem 46 engages the abutment 46 and its motion is stopped; the housing 36 continues to move and the seat 42 and seat portion 40 disengage to enable water to again flow through the sleeve 30.
