Abstract

915,195. Printable pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. NORTON CO. July 31, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 27734/61. Class 140. A printable tape comprises a flexible backing member having a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating on one side and a backsize coating bonded to the other side consisting essentially of (i) a terpolymer which is the reaction product of a mixture of 37 to 42 parts by weight butadiene, 18 to 38 parts by weight acrylonitrile, and 22 to 42 parts by weight styrene, and (ii) an inert particulate filler in an amount of from 5 to 40 parts by weight of the coating solids. A pigmented film coating, e.g. a vinyl resin dispersion of coloured pigments, may be present between the backing member and a transparent backsize coated containing 5 to 20 parts by weight of a particulate silica gel filler. The backing member may be paper, which may contain a butadiene-acrylonitrile saturant. The particulate filler may be titanium dioxide having a particle size of 0.3 microns, or silica gel having a surface area of at least 20 square metres per gram.
