Abstract

915,085. Control of several D.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 21, 1961 [July 29, 1960], No. 26544/60. Class 38 (3). A traction system is provided with two groups G1, G2, of parallel connected serieswound motors, each group driving a separate axle or number of axles. If the load on group G1 is lighter than that on group G2, switches S2, S3 are closed and switches S1 S4 are opened so that resistor SR reduces the relative amount of current supplied to the group G1, particularly at standstill. As the speed increases, the relative proportion of the total torque exerted by the group G1 tends to increase, whilst the closure of switches FS3, FS4 to weaken the fields of the motors of group G2 also tends to increase the proportion of the torque produced by these motors. Suitable selection of the values of resistor SR and the field-shunting resistors maintains a desired ratio between the tractive efforts of the groups. The switches controlling the resistors may be included in the notching steps of a main controller to ensure connection of the resistors as required for forward and reverse motion of the vehicle.
