In a traction system, the trailing motors of a bogie are supplied with a higher voltage than the leading motors, and also their fields are weakened, to compensate for weight transfer between the axles. Leading and trailing motor groups M2, M4 and Ml, M3 are supplied from bridge rectifiers R2 and R1 respectively. The voltage on R2 is derived directly from a tapped transformer 10 while that on R1 is boosted by an additional, fixed ratio, transformer 14. For reverse operation the two motor groups are transposed by switches S1 S2. Contactors C1 . . . C4 are closed as appropriate to connect divertor resistors across the fields of trailing motors.
