Abstract

915,081. Tubular heat exchangers. SPIROGILLS Ltd. Aug. 17, 1960 [Aug. 20, 1959], No. 28548/59. Class 64 (3). In a tubular heat exchanger in which an annular channel 21 exists between a nest of tubes 10 and a casing 11 surrounding the tubes, a flexible skirt 22 which may e.g. be made of a synthetic plastics material, extends around the tube nest and is urged by differential fluid pressure-to conform to the shape of the nest, and an annular sealing member extends between the outflow end of the skirt and the casing. The seating member may comprise an annular metal plate 25 to which is secured a flange 24 formed on the skirt, the plate 25 being itself secured to or sealed to the casing 11. In the form shown, the flange 24 and plate 25 are sandwiched between portions of the casing 11. Oil enters the casing through an inlet 12 and after flowing over the tubes is discharged from the casing through an outlet 13. Cooling water flows in a contra-flow direction through the tubes.
