Abstract
914,930. Spherical diaphragms. AEROJETGENERAL CORPORATION. April 4, 1957, No. 11087/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 13. Sound waves are generated for underwater signalling or for seismic prospecting, by a flexible bladder immersed in the fluid and inflated by air. The bladder is caused to vibrate as a diaphragm, i.e. expand and contract, by the alternate admission and emission of air, through a motor-operated valve, the speed of operation of which determines the sound frequency. The sound wave of larger amplitude is produced when the valve is operated such that admission and emission pulses occur at the bladder resonant frequency. The pressure pump supplying the expansion pulse feeds into a tank reservoir and the emission may take place freely to the atmosphere or may be assisted by an exhaust pump. The bladder is of neoprene or rubber so as to withstand repeated stretching.
