Abstract

An instrument providing a source of impulses for the seismological investigation of a terrain under water, includes a storage vessel filled with a compressed elastic fluid, which is rapidly connected without any intervening dead space, to azone capable of expansion having a very small initial volume, and a mobile detail acting directly on the water, consisting wholly or in part of a deformable wall. The storage vessel is sealed by a valve which is opened by the pressure of the stored elastic fluid itself and is propelled from its seat outwards; the valve being closed by a knuckle joint pulled into it strutting position automatically by springs. The instrument provides a simple and reliable method of producing a series of powerful shock waves in succession without bulky and heavy equipment.
