Abstract
1305990 Underwater apparatus C W WESTON JNR 22 Dec 1970 60969/70 Heading E1H Underwater apparatus comprises a casing 47, 77 containing power components (e.g. an electric motor and pump in closed circuit with a tool outside the casing) and liquid which is pressurised to a pressure above that of the surrounding medium by a device including a flexible diaphragm 52, 83 exposed to the surrounding medium. In Fig. 4 the liquid is oil and is pressurised by the greater density of sea water which is the surrounding medium. In Fig. 3 the device comprises a piston 50 with equal opposed faces subjected to the pressures of the fluid and the medium and biased either by a further piston 60 subjected to compressed gas pressures, or by a compression spring (39) Fig. 2 (not shown) between the floor of the chamber 47 and a head on the stem 55. Alternatively the device may comprise a differential area piston, Fig. 5 (not shown).
