Abstract

914,485. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 2, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 9184/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for determining the location of perforation defects in the sheaths of nuclear fuel elements comprises a first member defining an annular draw-off groove and a second member defining a helical draw-off groove concentric with the annular groove so that as a fuel element containing a sheath defect, through which can escape a pressurized detector gas, is advanced through the members at least two indications of the detector gas are obtained, one when the defect passes the annular groove and the other when it passes the helical groove. In the apparatus shown in the drawing a nuclear fuel element 1 is first placed in a pressure vessel 3 where it is subjected to nitrous oxide at a pressure of about 250 p.s.i. for several hours. The element is then passed at a steady speed (e.g. 4 inches per minute) through the test apparatus comprising a member 5 provided with an annular groove 12 communicating with a nitrous oxide gas detector, and a helical member 6 provided with a helical groove and with tappings 8 connected to a gas detector. Thus the time of occurrence of gas detected in groove 12 gives the axial location of a perforation in the wall of the fuel element, and the time gas is detected in member 6 gives the angular location. Other gases such as argon or helium may be used in place of nitrous oxide.
