A Moire fringe type displacement measuring system in which a plurality of phase-displaced photo-electric cells P1, P2, P3, P4, Fig. 1 (side elevation) and Fig. 2 (plan) sense crossed reflective and transmissive diffraction gratings 12, 14, is characterized in that each incident beam of light passes adjacent to the cell to which it is destined to be reflected. This arrangement reduces parallex errors which are introduced when all the incident light passes to one side of the group of cells. Specifications 760,321 and 810,478 are referred to.
