Abstract

1311275 Photo-electric displacement measurement FERRANTI Ltd 3 Sept 1970 [4 June 1969] 28193/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division G4] An index grating for photo-electric displacement measuring apparatus comprises a substrate carrying strips of photo-sensitive material on which are superimposed two sets at least of transparent, electrically conductive material, the strips of the respective sets alternating with one another and being connected to respective bus-bars, to provide a polyphase output. In the arrangement of Figs.1-5, the index grating 10 is transmissive. Light from lamp 1 is collimated at 2, passes through the movable index grating 10, and is reflected from scale grating 3 back to the photo-sensitive areas of the index. The latter is built up on a substrate of glass and comprises a set of conductive e.g. silver strips 12 connected to bus-bar 13, a set of photo-sensitive strips e.g. evaporated cadmium sulphide rendered photo-voltaic by cuprous ion doping, and the two sets of transparent, conducting strips 17, 19. This arrangement gives a two phase output on bus-bars 18, 20. By connecting the strips to form bus-bars, Fig.10 (not shown), a four phase output; or a two phase push-pull output may be provided. As many as ten phases may be provided. Other arrangements include: an opaque index grating, Fig.6-9 (not shown), in which the two sets of transparent, conducting strips are superimposed on photo-sensitive strips on an opaque substrate; reflective and transmissive gratings with irregular spacings.
