Abstract
913,952. Loose covers for books. BATTSON, E. R. Oct. 9, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1958], No. 34837/58. Class 16. A covering or protector for a book jacket is produced by taking a generally rectangular piece of relatively thin and flimsey tearresistant material 1, i.e. sheeting or film, of appropriate length and breadth, a longitudinal margin 2 of the surface of at least one side of which bears a semi-permanently tacky contactbonding adhesive strip 3, laying the material flat on a supporting surface, thereupon superimposing the jacket 5, outer face down, upon the material, taking care to centralize or otherwise suitably position the jacket with respect to the longitudinal edges 1a, 1b of the material, so that free portions 1c and 1d extend beyond the longitudinal edges of the material, then folding portions 1c and 1d along longitudinal edges 5a, 5b of the jacket so that the longitudinal adhesive bearing margin of portion 1c and the plain margin of portion 1d, or the two adhesive bearing margins of portions 1c, 1d, as the case may be, overlap along a line at the back of the jacket, and finally applying pressure to firmly adhere the said longitudinal margins together to form sleeve S. A book 6 is shown (Fig. 8) with one of its covers 7 located within end portion of a flat sleeve S which is wrapped around the covers 7 and spine 8 after being folded along line D-D in the direction of the arrow, whereupon the opposite end portion of the sleeve is folded in and engaged with the other cover. The material may bear adhesive at one longitudinal margin only and at the surface at one side only of the material, or at one longitudinal margin of the surface of one side and at the opposite longitudinal margin of the surface of the other sides of the material. The piece of material 1 is a length cut from an initially continuous web W of material. The adhesive strip 3 may be applied directly to the material by means of rollers, or applied in the form of a plastic film having adhesive on both sides thereof. The strip may, for storage purposes, be covered with a flexible protective strip 4, e.g. of waxed paper, which is peeled off prior to use. The material may be a film of a synthetic resin, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate, polythene or polyester.
