Description
March 5, 1963 A. BRODY BOOK COVERING DEVICE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 1'7. 1959 United States Patent 3,080,178 BOOK COVERING DEVICE Arthur Brody, 465 Melrose Place, South Orange, NJ. Filed Ap .17, 1959, Ser. No. 807,208 6 Claims. (Cl. 281-34) This invention relates generally to covers for books, and has particular reference to a protective cover which can be easily applied to a book and which will serve not only to protect the cover of the book but also to enclose and protect the decorative paper jacket that is usually provided on the book when it is sold.
An example of a type of protective book jacket cover is disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 2,445,871, dated July 27, 1948. It is an object of this invention to provide a device which is primarily a protection for the covers of the book itself but which can at the same time fulfill a function of the kind described and illustrated in said patent.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide a covering of this nature with improved means by which it may be readily attached to the covers of the book; .to
provide improved reinforcing means along edges of the covering to strengthen and reinforce the covering; and to construct the covering in a manner which makes it practical and economical from a manufacturing standpoint, easy to use, and unusually effective in performing the desired protective functions.
Briefly stated, the invention contemplates the provision of a book covering which includes a transparent facing applicable to the paper book jacket, and adhesive tapes attached in a special manner to the longitudinal margins of the facing so as to provide free projecting adhesivecoated flap portions by means of which an adhesive securement to the book can be established. In the preferred embodiment of the invention a twoaply book covering in the form of a strip has an outer ply or facing of transparent material and an inner ply of paper, the two plies being connected together at their longitudinal edges and cooperating in the formation of a sleeve in which the book jacket is accommodated to expose its printed or embellished outer face through the transparent facing.
Tapes coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive lie along the longitudinal edges of the covering, and have their adhesive-coated parts so arranged that when the covering is applied to the covers of a book, the adhesivecoated parts of the tapes may be caused adhesively to engage adjacent parts of the covers of the book to hold the covering in proper secure position on the book.
In a slightly modified arrangement of partsQan additional pressure-sensitive adhesive is provided on the inside face of the covering strip adjacent to each longitudinal edge, so arranged that when the flap portion of the adjacent tape is turned inward to engage one surface of the book cover the additional adhesive referred to is in an opposed relationship adapted to engage the other surface of the book cover.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a simple effective means for shielding the adhesive surfaces before the application of the covering to a book, thereby protecting these surfaces during shipping, storage or handling of the covers. This result is achieved by protective overlays which are readily removable when it is desired to apply the covering to a book.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of one end of the covering with its protective strip or overlay removed;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view, with parts in section, of a portion of a modified construction;
FIG. 6 is a face view of the same, with parts broken away to disclose construction;
FIG. 7 is a front perspective view of the covering in folded and notched condition preparatory to its application to a book;
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of a portion of a book, showing the covering partly applied to one of its covers;
FIG. 9 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 99 of FIGS. 8 and 10, showing the covering completely applied to the book cover;
FIG. 10 is a view of the book cover shown in FIG. 8 with the covering completely applied thereto;
FIG. 11 is a perspective view of a modified construction; and
FIG. 12 is a face view, with parts broken away, of another modified construction.
Because of the thin nature of the several plies and layers of which the device is composed, the drawings have been exaggerated for the sake of clarity of illustration. The proportions shown are therefore not in all respects dimensionally correct.
A preferred construction of the book covering, in its condition prior to application to a book, is shown in FIG.
1. It has the form of a relatively lengthy, flattened sleeve adapted to accommodate between its plies the embellished paper jacket that is usually provided on books. The sleeve-like strip includes an outer facing material of thin, transparent, flexible sheeting 1, preferably plastic, which allows the paper book jacket 2 to be visible through it. The strip also includes a lining material 3, which can be composed of thin and flexible, but tough, paper. The paper ply 3 is preferably longitudinally slit as shown at 4, thereby dividing it into two opposed flaps, shown respectively at 5 and 6, to facilitate the insertion of the paper book jacket between the outer transparent facing 1 and the paper liner 3.
The longitudinal edges of the transparent facing 1 are inturned as indicated at 7, thereby providing a strip 8 along each edge, and the longitudinal marginal edges of Secured along the opposite longitudinal edges of the strip are tapes 10 which are utilized for adhesively attaching the covering along with the enclosed paper book jacket to the book. Each of these tapes has one of its faces coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive material as shown at 11. In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 to 4 inclusive and FIGS. 7 to 10 inclusive, each of these tapes is longitudinally folded, as indicated at 12, thereby dividing it into a relatively narrow strip portion 13 which is adhesively afiixed to the outside face of the transparent facing 1 along a margin thereof, and mto a free projecting flap portion 14 which is utilized to adhesively attach the covering to a book cover in a manner presently to be described. To protect the adhesive faces 11 of the tapes 10 there is provided for each of .to insert between the transparent facing 1 and the paper liner 3 the paper jacket 2 that has been removed from the book. The placement of this jacket between the plies of the covering is facilitated by the fact that the paper liner is split as indicated at 4. The covering and the inserted paper boo-k jacket are now preliminarily fitted around the book to determine the proper transverse lines of fold for the covering. These lines are designated 17, 18, 19 and 20 in FIG. 7. The covering and the enclosed paper jacket are then removed from the book and the projecting portions 14 of the tapes 10 are split or notched as indicated at 21. This slitting of the tapes can be done if desired while the protective strips 15 remain adherently attached to the tapes. The result of slitting the tapes in the manner just explained is to divide the tapes (actually only the portions 14 thereof) into wings shown at 22, 23 and 24 in FIG. 7.
At this stage the protective overlays 15 may be removed from their respective underlying adhesive areas, or if desired the overlays may be left in position until the last moment and then peeled oif to expose the adhesive for use. In FIGS. 7 and 8, the protective strips 15 have been removed.
The central wings shown at 24 are now turned downwardly to cause them to lie against the central portion of the covering. The covering and its contained paper jacket are then fitted around the book again, and the flap portions 25 of the covering are inturned and caused to lie flatly against the inner faces of the book covers 36. The wings 23 of the tapes 10 are next turned over the upper and lower edges of the book covers 36 and the adhesive surfaces 11 of these wings are pressed against the outer faces of the book covers and are thus caused to adhere thereto. Next the wings 22 are turned over the upper and lower edges of the book covers 36 and are thus caused to adhere to the inner faces of the covers as well as to the portions of the flaps 25 over which the wings 22 are extended, as shown in FIG. 10. This completes the application of the covering to the book.
The tapes 10, extended along the longitudinal edges of the covering, thus not only provide strong reinforcements for these portions of the covering but also provide means by which the covering may be securely aflixed to the book. The nature of the pressure-sensitive adhesive employed on the tapes is such that while it effectively maintains the covering in position on a book, the covering may be readily removed when desired.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. and 6, the adhesive tape a is not provided with the longitudinal fold 12 of the previously-described device. Instead, the tape extends flatly outward from its area of attachment 13 and has its adhesive face 11 normally covered, and protected by the paper strip or overlay 15a which is stripped away when the covering is fitted on a book. The application of the covering to a book is substantially similar to that of the covering shown in FIG. 1.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 11 is similar in most respects to that shown in FIG. 1 in that it has a folded adheslve tape 1%, and the protective paper strip 15b is disposed between the adhesive face 11 of the tape and the inturned portion 8 of the transparent facing material. In this device, however, the part 8 is provided with an adhesive area 35 of pressure-sensitive material, so that when a book cover is embraced between the tape 10b and the part 8, the adhesive face 11 of the tape 1% will adhere to one side of the cover, while the adhesive area 35 will adhere to its opposite side.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 12 is similar to that shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, in that its adhesive tape 100 is not longitudinally folded or doubled over on itself. In this embodiment a portion of the face of the part 8 is provided with an adhesive material 36a, so that when the strip 100 is folded down over the top edge, or upwardly over the bottom edge, of a book cover, the cover will be adhesively engaged between said strip and the adhesive area 36a.
It will be understood that the covering device may be 4 made in various widths and lengths to fit books of different sizes. Also, many of the structural details herein described for explanatory purposes may be modified by those skilled in the art without necessarily departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
