Abstract
913,754. Boundary layer control on aircraft. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd. June 19, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 22912/60. Class 4. An aerofoil boundary layer control system comprises an aerofoil with a rounded trailing edge, at least two spanwise-extending discharge apertures in the aerofoil surface, one on each side of the trailing edge, each aperture being arranged to discharge a fluid stream rearwardly over the surface towards the trailing edge, means for varying the flow of the two streams relative to one another, and means for applying distributed suction to the trailing edge part of the aerofoil surface between the two apertures. The construction of the blowing slots is similar to that disclosed in Specification 883,865 with the addition of a porous or finely perforated area 51 positioned between rearwardly-directed blowing slots 10, 11. In operation a control 40 is operated to adjust valves 33, 34 whereby the flow through slots 10, 11 may be adjusted differentially to vary the position of the stagnation point X and simultaneously suction is applied through conduits 53 to a cavity 52 behind area 51, thereby achieving a lift variation equivalent to that normally produced by flaps or ailerons.
