Abstract

Formaldehyde and compounds having a high hydroxyl value are produced by contacting, in an acid medium, water and heavy residues obtained in the production of metadioxanes by the condensation of formaldehyde with mono-olefines having at least 3 carbon atoms. These heavy residues are compounds having a higher boiling point than the metadioxane product. Preferably the ratio by weight of water used to the heavy residues is at least 0.05 and desirably between 1 and 5. The preferred value for the pH of the mixture is below 4. Inorganic or organic acids may be used to produce the desired pH value if the heavy residues themselves are not sufficiently acidic. The process may be carried out at temperatures up to 180 DEG C., at atmospheric or super atmospheric pressure and continuously or otherwise. The water and the formaldehyde produced may be distilled off during or at the end of the reaction and in the latter case after optional neutralisation of the mixture. The hydroxylated compound is left in the reaction vessel as a clear aqueous solution which is neutralised, if necessary, filtered and concentrated.
