Abstract
913,621. Tubular heat-exchanger. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Jan. 27, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 3246/61. Class 64 (3). A heat-exchanger comprises a cylindrical housing within which a plurality of spiral pipes is arranged in planes substantially at rightangles and in a regular pattern with respect to the longitudinal axis of the housing, the pipes lying in adjacent planes being connected in series by return bends 2 provided alternately near the axis 5 and at a distance therefrom (see Fig. 1), and also return bends 3 and 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> provided near the wall of the housing. The housing 1 encloses a plurality of pipes series (two are shown in Fig. 2). The spiral pipes 4 of each series are grouped in sections 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP>, and the pipes of each section are joined in series by return bends 2 and 3, while the sections are joined by return bends 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 711. The spaces 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>11</SP> enable the pipes to be removed via the manholes 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>11</SP>. The spiral pipes 4 are arranged in a regular pattern in such a way that the distances between adjacent pipes are substantially equal at all points, and also the return bends 2 are arranged such that the central area between the bends is small thus causing the medium flowing in this area to flow at the same rate as that between the pipes.
