913,498. Manometer systems. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Aug. 23, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 24979/60. Class 106 (2). The pressure inside a vessel 1, such as the pressure vessel of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, is roughly measured by a gauge 7, a fine measurement (Π1%) being obtained by a manometer 3 (preferably water-filled) one limb of which communicates with gas in a cylinder 4 supporting a dead-weight 5. This has a platform 5a on to which further weights may be added. From a knowledge of the total weight acting on the gas in cylinder 4, and the difference of levels of the manometer liquid, the pressure in the vessel 1 can be calculated. Cylinder 4 may be supplied either from a separate gas reservoir 6 (as shown), in which case liquid traps are provided in each leg of the manometer to prevent loss should there be too large a pressure difference ; or, the valve 8 may be of the cross-connection type selectively supplying gas from vessel 1 to the cylinder 4 and then, in another position, connecting the manometer legs to the respective sides of the system.
