Abstract

[Also in Group XXII] In a machine-tool an automatic loading and unloading device comprises a transfer arm 10 pivotable about an axis parallel to a workpiece axis 9 and about its own longitudinal axis. In a gear-shaving or hobbing machine, the arm 10 is rotatable in bearings 13 in a housing 12 on a shaft 15 rotatable through 160 degrees in bearings in a housing 16 by an hydraulic motor 18. A work - engaging fork 21 is reciprocated on the arm 10 by a piston 24. When the shaft 15 is rotated, a cam 37 in the housing 16 moves a follower on a rack piston 34 to cause the arm 10 to rotate through 90 degrees. The housing 16 is reciprocated on bars 40 to pick up or deposit a gear from a conveyer 47 moved intermittently by hydraulic means. The machine loads a gear automatically between automatically-operated centres and returns the finished gear to the same position on the conveyer. In a modification, new workpieces are taken from one conveyer and finished workpieces are placed on another.
