In apparatus for measuring the spacing between two conductive surfaces, a pair of capacitive electrodes are arranged a known distance apart and facing the surfaces. The invention makes use of the principle described in the parent Specification of the effect on the output voltage of a high-gain amplifier of varying the capacitance connected in a negative feed-back path. Constant current sources 17 feed amplifiers 15 each having the capacitance of electrodes 12 connected in a negative feed-back path via the earthed output terminal 19. The output voltages are approximately proportional to the spacing between members 12, 18. The sum of the output voltages may be obtained by an adding circuit 20 comprising a negative feedback amplifier 21 and resistors 22. The output of amplifier 21 is rectified at 25 and indicated on a meter 24, the reading of which is added to the separation between electrodes 12 to give the separation between surfaces 18. Guard rings 13 are provided. Measuring moving bodies.-Fig. 3 shows a pair of capacitive electrodes measuring the width of a moving metal billet 40. In this case the outputs of the amplifiers 15 are coupled by transformers (Fig. 5, not shown) to an indicator, one of the transformers reversing the phase so that the indication is proportional to the difference in spacing of electrodes 41, 42 from the body 40. Rail gauges.-The apparatus may be mounted on a railway vehicle, as in Fig. 2, and capacitive electrodes 10, 11 used to determine the separation between the rails 30, 31. A depth gauge is illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown).
