When words, for recording on the track of a magnetic drum 10, are received at random points in time, track space is wasted due to the switching on and off of the write amplifier with consequent generation of noise on the track, and this is obviated by recording the incoming words at alternate positions on transfer tracks 21, 23 by the method described in U.S.A. Specification 2,798,554, and, at some later time, transferring them in continuous sequence to a storage track 22.
