Abstract
848,923. Electrical digital data-storage apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 3, 1959 [April 8, 1958], No. 10985/58. Class 106 (1)] A rotatable storage device, as described a magnetic drum, carries storage tracks each having a number of word storage sections and a control track WCT which carries a first series of control recordings each defining the point of commencement of a word section on the storage tracks, and a second series of control recordings each comprising an address of a word section within its storage track, the address recording being read by a transducing device at a time bearing a predetermined relationship to the time at which the word section to which the address refers is in operative relationship with a transducing device associated with the storage track containing the word section. In the drum described each storage track has 32 sections each capable of carrying 33-bit lengths words with a 7-bit inter-word gap. The first series of recordings appear at element position 31 of each section, the addresses at positions 1 to 5. Additionally a clock track providing element timing pulses WT is carried by the drum. A " 1 " on WCT produces an output PR for one element time which is gated through G2 to a shift register P32, P33 ... P40, P1 ... P30 if a control P1-P5 is off indicating that the digit is not part of an address. The register is used to identify any element within its word period and the digit is shifted by gating the output of P32 to P33, and to turn P32 off, by means of the clock pulses TW. This is shown generally within the chain-dotted rectangle. The actual output from the track may be used to identify P31. If the digit is an address digit it is gated to a utilization circuit SS which is preferably a shift register. The control P1-P5 is actuated by pulses from the shift register P1 to P40. The address recordings may be duplicated on WCT. Specification 799,793 is referred to.
