In a digital data storage device using a moving magnetizable medium the characteristics of a writing head, the speed of the medium, and the frequency of discrete data pulses are so chosen that consecutive discrete data pulses of the same polarity applied to the head produce a non-discrete flux distribution on the storage medium, as shown in Fig. 3 (part only), where coils 10a and 10b are the two halves of a centretapped writing head coil..
