Abstract
912,142. Telephone instruments. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 25, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 2630/60. Class 40 (4). In an electro-mechanical transducer particularly for use as a loud-speaker, a hollow cylindrical permanent magnet 4 attached by plate 3 and rod 2 to a diaphragm 1 is arranged so that it can move freely in an axial direction in the small annular space between two coaxial non-magnetic stationary conductors 5, 6, e.g. of copper, having axially extending slits 7, 8 (Fig. 2). The current supply terminals are at the walls of each slit and the current in the two conductors are in antiphase so that the fields in the annular space are in the same direction. Substantially all the lines of force from magnet 4, which is made, for example, of PtCo, length 10 mm. and wall thickness 2 mm., pass through the copper conductors if these are about 1 mm. thick. The total absence of iron in the magnetic circuit reduces asymmetries in the circuit which might result in lateral forces and hence unfavourable deformation of the response curve. Stripshaped conductors may replace the copper sleeves or wire wound coils may be used. Specification 469,093 is referred to.
