Abstract

911,673. Turbines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 17, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 13157/59. Class 110 (3). In a bolted nozzle box construction 4 for a high-pressure, high-temperature steam turbine, Figs. 1 and 2, including an inlet conduit 5 extending through an opening in the inner casing 2 into an opening in the outer casing 1 and having an integral flange 6 engaging the adjacent surface of the inner casing 2, a plurality of bolts 11 are circumferentially spaced around the flange and are connected through openings in the inner casing 2 with an annular member 12 spaced from the inner casing 2 to define coolant flow passages 12b, 13a, substantially surrounding the annular member. The conduit 5 has at least one port 5e which supplies motive fluid to the coolant passages through at least one passage 5b, 5c, Fig. 5, forced between the conduit 5 and annular member 12 upon a sudden reduction of the temperature of the working fluid. This allows cooling fluid to flow round the member 12 and cause it to expand and contract at the same rate as the flange 6 and this prevents excessive bending stresses on the bolts 11.
