Abstract

911,653. Sack loaders on vehicles; luffing arm apparatus. POPE, H. C. July 19, 1961 [July 12, 1960], No. 24299/60. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). When a sack is placed in a cradle on the outer end of a loading arm 1 a valve 18 is operated to cause the piston-rod 12 of an hydraulic ram 9 to turn a link 10 about a pivot 6, mounted in frame members 3 beneath a vehicle floor 2, thus raising the loading arm 1. After the sack is removed by a man on the vehicle the valve 18 is spring-urged to its original position and the arm 1 descends. The valve 18 is operated by a strap 22 on which the loaded sack rests and which is connected to an arm 19 by a chain 21 and a spring 20. The arm 1 is connected to the link 10 by two pairs of trunnions 14, 15 which engage hooks 16 and rest on projections 17, respectively, to facilitate dismantling the arm for transport. A pivot 7 connects the ram 9 to side-plates 4 of the supporting structure and the piston-rod 12 is pivoted to the link 10 by a member 11. An overload valve protects the hydraulic system in the event of the arm or cradle abutting an obstruction during lifting. The arm 1 may be telescopic.
