Abstract

<PICT:0911130/III/1> Flake salt is produced by subjecting moist granular salt, e.g. containing 0,005 to 0,5% by weight of moisture and the majority by weight of the particles, preferably all, having a particle size of 20 to 200 Tyler mesh, to a compacting action under pressure and preferably at a temperature in excess of ambient temperature to form a sheet having a thickness less than 0,03 of an inch, cooling the formed sheet slowly and then breaking up the sheet into flakes. The moisture in the granular salt may be augmented. In the figure, finely ground ordinary granular salt is delivered from a measuring device 1 e.g. by gravity, to screw conveyer 3 provided with steam jacket 4, and water is sprayed into the salt at 7. The salt thus heated to 200 DEG to 270 DEG F. is then taken via a vibrating feeder-spreader 8 to rolls 9, the rollers of which may rotate at the same or different speeds and are preferably heated. The sheet of compacted salt formed is placed on a conveyer 10 for at least 15 minutes prior to being discharged on to corrugated roll crusher 11 in which the sheet of salt is broken into small fragments (flakes).
